Native Texas Wildlife in Edwards County:

Whitetail Deer – (Hunting Nov – Jan) In my opinion there are two types of Whitetail in Edwards County.  Since Edwards county is part of the Balcones Fault line which is the divide of the Texas Hill Country and the Texas Brush Country you have a mix two types of Whitetail intersect.  Hill Country Whitetail have lower body mass and have cagier racks.  Brush Country Whitetail Deer have a larger mass and wider and larger racks.  Both are present in the Edwards County region.  For population estimates of Whitetail Deer in Edwards go to this link:  Whitetail Population

Turkey – (Hunting Season Date Varies) – Turkey flourish in Edwards County.  For season information (North Region) please go to this link: Turkey Season Info

Game Birds (Quail, Dove) – Personal experience has shown that Bobwhite Quail, Gambel’s Quail, and Dove flourish in this region.  In some areas you will be able to hear Bobwhite Quail calling in the evenings.  For more info on game birds please go to link:   Game Birds In Texas

Coyotes – Coyote sightings and hunting are rare since the majority of the Coyotes were killed out numerous years ago due to goat herders.

Javelina – Sightings of Javelinas in recent years have been rarer than 20 years ago in the county.  Reasons why of the decline could be that Feral Hogs have taken over the region.

Exotic game regularly seen in Edwards county include:

Aoudad (Hunting Year Round) – The Barbary sheep is a species of caprid native to rocky mountains in North Africa. Six subspecies have been described. Although it is rare in its native North Africa, it has been introduced to North America, southern Europe, and elsewhere.  Mass can be up to 310 pounds, have a very large territory, and can be destructive to feeders or ranch equipment.  Aoudad can reproduce at a high rate in addition.  Aoudad are considered extinct in its wild ranges, but thrive in Northern Mexico and parts of the United States.  Texas Aoudad Hunting! Elk (Hunting Year Round)– Even though Elk are native to the United States they considered to be an exotic game species in Texas at this time.  Elk have been seen throughout Edwards County, but mainly off Highways 674 and 377.  I have seen in person some sheds measuring over 44 inches in length of Texas Elk.  Protein feeding will attract Elk, and great habitat such thick brush in the hills.  Elk do have a large habitat range. Texas Elk hunting is possible! LINK: Elk

Axis Deer (Chital) – (Hunting Year Round)–  Axis Deer actively compete with native Whitetail deer in the same habitat.  Axis have been seen throughout Edwards County Texas.  Axis typically like low level valley instead of hilltops etc.  Per Troy D Hibbitts: Axis deer (Axis axis) are easily identified by an orange coat with white spots similar to a whitetail fawn. Mature males and females have white patches on their throat while only mature males have antlers with an average of 6 points per antler. Female axis deer do not grow antlers and have a mature body size of 90 to 150 lbs while males weigh an average of 150 to 250 pounds. Behavior of axis deer is nearly identical to native whitetail deer with majority of activity occurring at dusk and dawn. Herds are comprised of males and females of various ages throughout the year. Height rut is in June and July of each year.  Axis Deer have the same spotty pattern as White Tail fawns and are typically hunted for their non gamey meat source.  Texas Axis Hunting!  LINK:Axis

Feral Hog – (Hunting Year Round)– Feral Hogs in Texas are expanding in Texas and significantly in the Rocksprings Texas area.  Even though hunting for Texas Pigs or Texas Feral Hogs is very popular, Feral Hogs cause Texas over $500mm a year in crop and range damage, and ruin wildlife habitat.  Feral Hogs reproduce three times a year, are ready to reproduce in only 6 months, and have an average of 6+ babies three times a year.  For more information on Texas Hog Hunting: Feral Hogs

Mouflon Sheep – (Hunting Year Round) Mouflon sheep have reddish to dark brown, short-haired coats with dark back stripes and black ventral areas and light-colored saddle patches. The males are horned; some females are horned, while others are polled. The horns of mature rams are curved in almost one full revolution (up to 85 cm). Mouflon have shoulder heights around 0.9 m and body weights of 50 kg (males) and 35 kg (females).  Mouflon Ram run wild in many part of the area.  For more information on Mouflon Texas Hunting, LINK: Mouflon
